Over 50 different hormones are produced in the human body that have an effect on and are interconnected with numerous other hormone systems within the body, particularly the reproductive system and thyroid. These two coupled with the adrenal glands together comprise what is known as the Hormone Circuit in the NeuroEndoMetabolic (NEM) Stress Response. For those who have been overly stressed, hormones become thrown out of balance and this can lead to a condition known as adrenal fatigue. Progesterone helps in many instances, balance hormones - particularly for those suffering from adrenal fatigue.
While progesterone cream is primarily marketed towards women, men and women produce the same sex hormones albeit in different amounts. Women produce nearly twice the amount of progesterone that men do. Despite this, both men and women are susceptible to hormone imbalances. Like women, men can utilize progesterone cream to help keep their estrogen levels in check. It is important for anyone experiencing an imbalance in hormones to seek medical assessment.
Progesterone “helps to regulate [a woman’s] cycle,” and its primary function “is to get [the] uterus ready for pregnancy.” After the monthly ovulation, progesterone is emitted in the female body to help thicken the lining of the uterus in order to help the body prepare for the fertilization of an egg. If an egg is not presently being fertilized, progesterone levels will drop in order for menstruation to begin.
Estrogen can be balanced out by the introduction of more progesterone to the body. If your body is short on progesterone, there will be an imbalance of too much estrogen. The use of progesterone cream can help with a hormone imbalance where estrogen is
the dominant hormone. Estrogen dominance can happen as a result of chronic stress, birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy, your environment, and more.
When looking for progesterone cream it’s important to note there are two kinds: synthetic and natural. We’ve researched some of the key differences between the two and listed them for you below:
Synthetic: more commonly used and prescribed. It will be labeled as Progestin and not progesterone. This type is stronger and more powerful (and not in a good way) than natural progesterone and needs to be used with caution otherwise a larger imbalance in hormones will be at risk.
Natural: labeled as it is, progesterone. This is a natural diuretic that helps to regulate menstruation and stabilize blood sugar levels as well as restore libido and oxygen levels.
Cortisol, the stress hormone, is typically higher in the early stages of adrenal fatigue. This is why the causes of stress must first be addressed in order to help the hormone imbalance or it will continue to remain out of balance. Having a deficiency in progesterone can widen the gap of the hormonal imbalance for cortisol production if the stress is not dealt with. Once underlying conditions are managed, the use of progesterone cream will help to balance cortisol production.
Progesterone cream is best applied before bed in order to give your skin time to absorb the hormone and allow it to work into your body. It’s best to start out at a lower dose and gradually work your way up. Please take note of any potential chemical sensitivities before using progesterone cream. The cream can also be used to alleviate PMS symptoms such as cramps and cycle regulation. If you’re unsure of the dosage, please consult with your physician first.
While progesterone cream is a great help in balancing hormones, it’s one part of a larger plan. Consult your physician if you feel your hormones are imbalanced in order to have a panel done and see proper results. Your physician will then work out a full hormone therapy plan to help you recover, which may include the use of progesterone cream.
