Testosterone Patch Beats Diabetes And Boosts Libido

Testosterone has had a disreputable reputation in the past and has been associated with body builders’ muscles, but now it is
associated with beating diabetes.

Like many Type 2 diabetics, when he was first diagnosed Charles Lawson was overweight – and despondent.
‘I’d just lost my oomph,’ recalls the 68-year-old teacher. ‘The nurse at my GP practice suggested diet and exercise, but my waistline just kept expanding. I was falling asleep all the time and I’d even stopped gardening, which I love.’

Study: Being Obese Can Take Years Off Your Life

LONDON – Being obese can take years off your life and in some cases may be as dangerous as smoking, a new study says. British researchers at the University of Oxford analyzed 57 studies mostly in Europe and North America, following nearly one million people for an average of 10 to 15 years. During that time, about 100,000 of those people died.

The studies used Body Mass Index (BMI), a measurement that divides a person’s weight in kilograms by their height squared in meters to determine obesity. Researchers found that death rates were lowest in people who had a BMI of 23 to 24, on the high side of the normal range.

Big Biceps May Mean a Longer Life

NEW YORK — The size of a man’s biceps and his waist could provide a more accurate picture of his mortality risk than body mass index alone, according to British researchers.

A study of 4,107 men aged 60 to 79 found those with a waist of less than 102 centimeters and above-average muscle mass in their upper arms were the least likely to die over a six-year period, according to Dr. S. Goya Wannamethee of Royal Free and University College Medical School in London.

High Testosterone Linked to Men’s Lower Death Risk

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Higher naturally occurring levels of the male hormone testosterone appear to protect men from fatal heart attacks or strokes and death from all manner of causes, researchers in Britain said on Monday.

But the researchers cautioned men not to begin testosterone supplementation based on the results of this 10-year study, saying the benefits and risks are unclear.

Pot Belly Linked to Heart Disease

Even a small pot belly can increase the risk of heart disease, scientists warn.

Research from the University of Texas found large waist measurements, relative to hip size, were linked to early signs of heart disease.

This confirms other research that waist size, rather than overall body weight, is a key indicator of heart disease.

The study of 2,744 people suggests that a waist size of 32ins (81cm) for a woman and 37ins (94cm) for a man represents a “significant” raised risk.

Exercise May Generate New Blood Vessels

Having a bad heart doesn’t mean you can skip exercise, doctors said Wednesday. In fact, it may even help your heart to repair itself. Research presented at the European Society of Cardiology meeting showed that exercise sparks the creation of new heart vessels.

In a small study of 37 people at Leipzig University in Germany, Dr. Robert Hollriegel found that people with serious heart failure who rode a bike for up to 30 minutes a day for four months produced new stem cells in their bones.

Study predicts 75 percent overweight in U.S. by 2015

If people keep gaining weight at the current rate, fat will be the norm by 2015, with 75 percent of U.S. adults overweight and 41 percent obese, U.S. researchers predicted on Wednesday.

A team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore examined 20 studies published in journals and looked at national surveys of weight and behavior for their analysis, published in the journal Epidemiologic Reviews.

Testosterone Protects Male Brains

Study shows hormone replacement may cut dementia risk

Sharon Kirkey , CanWest News Service

Testosterone patches can not only boost potency and sex drive, they may protect the male brain from Alzheimer’s disease.

A new study shows testosterone therapy reduces levels of a sticky protein that causes plaque buildup in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s.

So far, the work has been done only in mice. But University of Southern California researchers believe “that we are on to something” and that testosterone replacement therapy might one day treat or prevent Alzheimer’s in aging men.

High-protein Diets Curb Appetite

The ever-popular low-carbohydrate diets appear to work because they force people to eat more protein, which consequently suppresses the appetite, not because of a lower carbohydrate intake, according to new study findings published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

These results suggest that it’s not necessary for people to cut back carbohydrates to lose weight, according to Dr. Arne Astrup of the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen, who wrote an accompanying editorial.
